Agbonlahor tears into Liverpool ace after what he did v Aston Villa
Gabby Agbonlahor was less than impressed with Darwin Nunez after what he did for Liverpool in their 2-2 Premier League draw against Aston Villa on Wednesday.
The Reds narrowly extended their lead at the top of the table thanks to the point they earned and now have an impressive eight-point gap between themselves and second-placed Arsenal, albeit the Gunners have a game in hand.
While many of Liverpool’s fans will have likely wanted more from their team, a point seemed to be a fair result with neither team sitting back throughout the clash.
Nunez had a particularly poor game after he was brought on in the 66th minute and was one of the main reasons why the Merseyside outfit didn’t leave Villa Park with all three points.
Team | Position | Points |
Liverpool | 1st | 61 |
Arsenal | 2nd | 53 |
Nottingham Forest | 3rd | 47 |
Manchester City | 4th | 44 |
Gabby Agbonlahor doesn’t think Darwin Nunez is good enough for Liverpool
Fans have stuck by Nunez since he was brought in by Jurgen Klopp and no matter how much faith is put into him, it feels like he takes one step forward and then three or four back.
There were multiple times on Wednesday evening when the Uruguay international could have put the game to bed but instead, he ended up missing the target altogether.
Speaking live on talkSPORT (20 February), Agbonlahor tore into the attacker and slammed his recent form.
“I love his work, his endeavour, his finishing is just a big question mark,” Brazil said.
To which Agbonlahor replied: “But does work and endeavour get you to the level that Liverpool should be at?
“Playing centre-forward for Liverpool you need more, he’s just got tap that caress it in but he balloons it over the bar.
“Looking at this season, he’s played 35 games and scored six goals in all competitions, that’s not a Liverpool striker.”
Arne Slot needs a new striker
While Liverpool may have been one of the most dominant forces in the Premier League this season, that’s largely down to the fact that Mohamed Salah has been in some of the best form of his career.
The ‘Egyptian King’ has undoubtedly been the Reds’ best player this term and without him among their ranks, it’s unknown where they’d be in the table.
Slot has chosen to change his number nine on multiple occasions this season with the likes of Nunez, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo often becoming the focal point of the Merseyside outfit.

However, none of the trio are all that spectacular when leading the line and would likely perform much better if played out wide.
So, it won’t come as much of a surprise that fans want to see a new striker welcomed through the Anfield doors in the summer.
Names such as Wolves’ Matheus Cunha and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak have been linked with a move but, as of now, nothing concrete has yet surfaced.
