Dominik Szoboszlai proves Warnock wrong after what he did for Liverpool v Wolves

Dominik Szoboszlai’s performance in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory against Wolves on Sunday has proved Stephen Warnock wrong yet again.

The 24-year-old has continued to be a star in the Liverpool squad this term, making 23 Premier League appearances.

Speaking live on commentary for BBC Radio Five Live during the win over Wolves, Warnock made a Szoboszlai comparison that was way off.

Stephen Warnock makes Steven Gerrard comparison

Szoboszlai has had a good season for Liverpool so far and has contributed three goals and two assists in the top flight this term.

With the Merseyside outfit sitting seven points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, it is no surprise that there is plenty of excitement surrounding the squad at Liverpool.

However, Warnock’s praise was well above anything else as he said (16 February): “He’s got shades of Gerrard with the way he moves with the ball at times Szoboszlai.”

Stephen Warnock getting carried away with Dominik Szoboszlai claim

While Szoboszlai has been impressive this term, comparing him to Steven Gerrard is quite the claim, especially when considering his performance against Wolves.

Although they won the game, it was not the greatest of performances from Liverpool at Anfield, especially in the second half.

Szoboszlai played for the full 90 minutes but had just 45 touches of the ball throughout the game [FotMob], which is certainly not what you’d usually expect to see from the midfielder.

Although the 24-year-old had a passing accuracy of 81 per cent, he completed just one pass into the final third and failed to create any chances in the game.

Furthermore, when you consider his work at the other end of the field, he also failed to do as well as expected at that end, either.

Szoboszlai won only 50 per cent of his tackles and also lost six of his duels, more than he won.

Finally, with a 33 per cent rate for successful dribbles, his performance against Wolves certainly was not up to the general standards you would expect.

While the Hungarian has shown his talent throughout the season so far, surely this is a stretch from Warnock given just how complete Gerrard’s performances were regularly.

For now, it is best for the 24-year-old to continue to focus on his performance and development rather than getting distracted by any outside claims like this one.
