Alexander-Arnold proves Carragher wrong after what he did in Liverpool v Wolves

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Wolves on Sunday proved a claim that Jamie Carragher made about him wrong.

Alexander-Arnold has been in and out of Arne Slot’s team over the last couple of weeks due to injury which has meant that Connor Bradley has come in and replaced him.

Carragher was co-commentating on the game for Sky Sports (16 February) and made a claim about the right back which he ended up rubbishing by the time Slot took him off the pitch.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is crucial to Liverpool

When Alexander-Arnold is left out of the Reds’ team, it’s rather noticeable.

The Englishman is one of Slot’s most creative players and without him, the team are far less effective in attack.

So, that’s why it was a welcome bonus when Slot named the Englishman as his starting right-back for the game against Wolves.

However, speaking live on Sky Sports Premier League (16 February), Carragher shared his thoughts on the performance Alexander-Arnold was putting in at the start of the game.

“In the first 20 minutes, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s passing has been a little rusty, he’s been out for a little bit,” he said.

How did Trent Alexander-Arnold prove Jamie Carragher wrong?

As per Sofascore, in the 64 minutes that the right-back was on the pitch, he maintained a pass accuracy of 81 per cent and also had 61 touches of the ball.

Of the eight long balls he attempted, 63 per cent of them made it to their intended target which is a fairly impressive return.

Defensively, Alexander-Arnold was also fairly solid as 71 per cent of the ground duels he attempted were done so successfully and he also made five tackles, two interceptions and was only dribbled past once.

The right-back also tried his hand in attack and while the two shots he had in the game were off-target, it’s clear that the attacking nature of the defender is well-missed when he’s absent.

These statistics alone prove what Carragher said wrong and outline how much of a positive impact he can have on the team when called upon.

Only time will tell what the future holds regarding Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation but if Sunday’s win against Wolves is anything to go off of, an extension is needed for the Englishman as soon as possible.
