Van Dijk ‘contract announcement ready’ as Paul Joyce makes Richard Hughes reveal

Liverpool fans can breathe a sigh of relief as one of their three major contract sagas may finally be coming to an end.

Van Dijk is one of three superstars who have entered the final six months of their contract at Anfield, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah being the other two.

As all their deals run out at the end of June, fans are sweating over the futures of three of Arne Slot’s best players beyond this season.

Negotiations over new contracts have been ongoing with all three players and Richard Hughes’ efforts may now be bearing fruit, at least with regards to Van Dijk.

Virgil van Dijk representatives spotted at Anfield

Van Dijk’s representatives were spotted sitting next to Hughes in Anfield’s directors’ box during Liverpool’s 4-0 win against Tottenham in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Thursday (6 February), according to Paul Joyce.

The ever-reliable journalist wrote via The Times‘ website (7 February) that the Netherlands international’s representatives being alongside Hughes might be a sign of things to come.

He added that talks over a new contract are still ongoing between the two parties.

Richard Hughes hard at over Liverpool triple contracts

Liverpool fans have not seen much of Hughes since he became the club’s director of football ahead of the 2024-25 season as he is not one to make many public appearances.

However, not only was he present at Anfield on this occasion, but was also spotted sitting alongside Van Dijk’s representatives.

Their decision to make such an appearance for a rather big occasion like an EFL Cup semi-final suggests that discussions over a new contract are indeed heading in a positive direction.

Would they not have preferred to stay away from the public eye considering the importance of the matter otherwise?

Therefore, it would not be a surprise if Van Dijk is the first of the three aforementioned players to put pen to paper on a new contract with the Merseyside-based club.

While Salah may also commit his future to Slot’s side, there are major doubts about Alexander-Arnold’s future with the Premier League giants.
