Liverpool to ‘make Salah contract decision’ amid ‘gentleman’s agreement’

Liverpool could be set to make a contract decision about Mohamed Salah after a “gentleman’s agreement” was mooted.

The Egypt international has been on fire this campaign, contributing heavily as the Reds sit top of the Premier League and have earned a League Cup final place.

With that being said, the 32-year-old hasn’t yet committed his future to Anfield despite his current deal coming to an end at the end of the season.

Arne Slot’s side may have now given a hint about their stance in negotiations after the latest transfer development on Merseyside.

Liverpool show stance in Mohamed Salah contract talks

There is no doubt that the former Chelsea ace is deserving of a fresh deal with the Reds given how important he has been since signing in 2017.

As a result, it is a surprise that his contract has been allowed to run down to this extent regardless of hope from supporters in L4.

With there being plenty of insecurity around the forward and his future, it appears that Slot and Co. are identifying potential replacements ahead of the summer window opening.

This has seen the Reds show an interest in Xavi Simons, despite him only signing for RB Leipzig permanently during the winter window [Christian Falk].

The Netherlands international signed a deal with the Bundesliga side after a £41million deal was agreed with PSG, but there is still every chance he could leave within less than six months.

There is reportedly the potential of a “gentleman’s agreement or a release clause” in his new contract at the Red Bull Arena which Liverpool could take advantage of in the coming months.

Xavi Simons could replace Mohamed Salah at Anfield

The 21-year-old has the versatility to feature on either flank or even through the middle as a number ten which could be useful for Slot next season.

If Salah does ultimately leave, the former Feyenoord head coach could opt to utilise the former PSV star on the right-hand side.

With this idea already in the pipeline in L4, there may be less desire from the hierarchy at Anfield to rush through a new contract for the Egyptian.

There would likely be similar finances involved in both deals but with the 11-year difference between the two, it will be interesting to see which avenue the Reds go down, looking ahead to the new campaign.
