Liverpool and Arsenal title verdict shared as ‘reckless’ gamble baffles
Liverpool have been leading the way in the Premier League since the start of the season with the Reds ending up as one of the most dominant forces in the league.
Not only has their form been top-notch in the top flight but it has also transferred over to every other competition with the Merseyside outfit finding themselves in the final of the Carabao Cup and at the top of the Champions League table as well.
In terms of the Premier League, however, Arne Slot’s men have a six-point gap between themselves and second-placed Arsenal and even have a game in hand over the Gunners.
So, at the moment, it feels like the league is Liverpool’s to lose.
Liverpool have the upper hand over Arsenal in the Premier League
Much like Liverpool, Arsenal failed to strengthen their ranks in the winter transfer window despite their obvious need for reinforcement.
While most of Mikel Arteta’s team have performed to a decent standard this term, one of the main things they’re missing is an out-and-out striker.
Indeed, Kai Havertz can do a solid job on occasion but if the Gunners want to be involved in the Premier League title race until the end of the season, they’re going to need a better option than the German to lead the line.
Writing for the print edition of the Daily Mirror (7 February, page 55), Andy Dunn shared his thoughts on Arsenal’s decision to not add any new faces to their squad.
“When the transfer window closed, Arsenal’s inactivity looked to be a bit of a gamble, but the 5-1 romp against Manchester City was still fresh in the memory,” he wrote.
“However, a few days later, Gabriel Martinelli was limping out of the defeat at St James’ Park and a couple of others looked as though they would certainly need the rest coming their way in Dubai over these next couple of days.
“Take into account the Gunners’ long-term injuries and Liverpool’s relatively clean bill of health, and that bit of a gamble is already starting to look a bit reckless.”
Arne Slot’s men need to capitalise on the depleted Arsenal squad
Slot’s time in charge of Liverpool so far has been nothing short of remarkable with the Dutchman picking up from exactly where Jurgen Klopp left and perhaps even doing better on some fronts.
Talk of the Reds winning the Premier League title was nowhere to be heard at the start of the season with most anticipating Liverpool to just finish inside the top four.
However, thanks to the poor performances of Manchester City and the number of injuries that Arteta has suffered, it feels like the Merseyside outfit are well on their way to earning another top-flight title.
To make things even better, as aforementioned, the Reds are still in each of the tournaments they were in at the start of the season, which means that they could end up coming away with more than one trophy to add to their cabinet if Slot can play his cards right.
Only time will tell what the rest of the season has in store but at the moment, it feels like everyone involved with Liverpool is beaming with pride.
