Van Dijk told to ‘Stop It’ after what he did in Liverpool win v Bournemouth

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk was told to “stop it” by Pat Nevin after his imperious display in the 2-0 win over Bournemouth .

Arne Slot’s side beat an in-form Cherries side at the Vitality Stadium to extend their lead in the Premier League title race to nine points with Arsenal in action on Sunday (2 February).

The Reds’ captain put in an outstanding performance on the south coast making six recoveries and four clearances in the contest. [Fotmob]

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live (1 February, 16:47 pm), Nevin was left awestruck, saying: “Looking at Liverpool, they have a maturity about them.

“It all comes from one man, Virgil van Dijk at the back.

“Time and time again you think, ‘stop it’ – he is doing it effortlessly.”

Liverpool need to sort out Van Dijk’s contract

The skipper is out of contract in the summer and can agree on a pre-contract with foreign teams as it stands.

The Reds need to secure a new contract for the Dutchman as he has shown that he can still perform consistently at the top level.

The noise surrounding the skipper’s expiring deal and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah is threatening to derail the Merseysiders’ title bid as finance expert Dan Plumley exclusively told Liverpool News.

The club must tie him down at the very least, if not also extending their other two stars as it will be near impossible to replace his influence at the back.

The veteran has formed a formidable partnership with Ibrahima Konate in the heart of defence with the Reds conceding the joint-least goals in the league.

If Slot’s side goes on to win the Premier League title, the 33-year-old’s performance will be a key factor as he has shown no signs of slowing down despite his advancing age.
