Premier League issue statement after Bournemouth v Liverpool controversy

The Premier League has issued a statement in the wake of a controversial moment as Liverpool opened the scoring against Bournemouth.

Liverpool were awarded a penalty for Lewis Cook’s clip on Cody Gakpo inside the box, which Mohamed Salah calmly converted with half an hour played of Saturday’s (1 February) contest.

The Bournemouth fans inside the Vitality Stadium were furious with the awarding of the spot-kick, which went to a VAR check and stood.

In a post on X [1 February], the Premier League March Centre said: “The referee’s call of penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the challenge deemed to have been a trip by Cook on Gakpo.

“The VAR also confirmed Gakpo was onside in the build-up.”

Salah made no mistake from the spot and he gave Liverpool the lead, silencing a hostile home crowd in the process.

As for the decision itself, Cook clipped Gakpo and, even if it was not intentional, he sent his opponent crashing to the floor.

The home fans may not have been happy, but there is simply no question that the referee was correct in pointing to the spot.

Liverpool have been on the end of some questionable decisions this season, and it is nice to see this one go in the favour of Arne Slot’s men.

As they say, these decisions tend to even themselves out over the course of the season. On this occasion, it went in the Reds’ favour and Salah took full advantage.

In other Liverpool news, Slot made a questionable decision for the clash with Bournemouth.
