Cody Gakpo shines in 9/10, teen in 1/10 debut shocker – Liverpool ratings v PSV

Arne Slot will be shocked after his makeshift Liverpool side fell to a 3-2 defeat against PSV in their Champions League clash on Wednesday.

The Reds got off to quite a slow start with their opening goal only coming thanks to a poor challenge from Joey Veerman on Federico Chiesa, which resulted in Liverpool getting themselves a penalty.

However, Peter Bosz’s men then brought their A-game to the Reds as by the end of the first half, the Dutch outfit found themselves 3-2 ahead.

The second half of the game was fairly end-to-end but neither side could convert their chances, which resulted in no change to the score by the end of the game.

Amara Nallo, who was brought on in the 83rd minute, found himself sent off in the 87th minute of the game after denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Here, Liverpool News have rated each player’s performance out of 10.

Liverpool earn eighth win in Champions League against PSV

Caoimhin Kelleher – 5

Conceded three times on the night, wasn’t his best game in a Liverpool shirt but likely wasn’t helped all that much by the Reds’ make-shift defence.

Connor Bradley – 4

One of his worst games in a Liverpool shirt, seemed out of place and nowhere near the player that has been on show since the start of the season.

Jarell Quansah – 4

Didn’t form the best centre-back partnership with Robertson on Wednesday, seems to be half the player he was last term.

Andy Robertson – 5 (Off for Trey Nyoni, 63′)

Slot’s experiment of putting Robertson in centre-back didn’t work as the Dutchman would have likely hoped despite the many forward balls he played in the clash.

Kostas Tsimikas – 5

Was probably the strongest defender on the pitch after what was an abysmal defensive performance from the Merseyside outfit.

James McConnell – 6

McConnell has certainly performed better in other games but seemed comfortable in the midfield and managed to easily outperform Wataru Endo on the night.

Wataru Endo had a stinker against PSV

Wataru Endo – 4

Didn’t have all that much of a say in the game, decent link between the defence and attack but was out-muscled on the ball for PSV’s second.

Harvey Elliott – 7

Liverpool ace Harvey Elliott

Scored the Reds’ second of the game and made bursting runs up and down the pitch throughout the clash, seemed as if he was a Duracell bunny.

Federico Chiesa – 7

Had an impressive game from the off, burst of pace down the right-hand side and lovely to see him get some much-needed minutes

Jayden Danns – 7 (Off for Amara Nallo, 83′)

Held up play very well throughout the clash but didn’t quite manage to get his name on the scoresheet.

Cody Gakpo – 9 (Off for Tyler Morton, 51′)

Liverpool’s best player by a country mile, had a hand in the Reds’ first two goals and proved his worth once again.

Substitutions

Tyler Morton – 6 (On for Gakpo, 51′)

Helped shore things up in the centre of the park and stopped Liverpool from getting overloaded.

Trey Nyoni – 6 (On for Robertson, 63′)

Brought on for the last half an hour or so, made a good name for himself and got some valuable minutes under his belt.

Amara Nallo – 1 (On for Danns, 83′)

Came on in the dying embers of the game to get his first taste of senior-team football and then found himself sent off in the 87th minute after denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity for PSV.
