Liverpool gem ‘set for Anfield exit’, already been spotted in new club’s kit

Oakley Cannonier is spending the week on trial at Leeds United with a Liverpool exit now on the cards, according to Lewis Bower.

The journalist, who independently covers the Reds’ academy, reported via his personal X account (27 January) that the 20-year-old was on the bench for Leeds Under-21s‘ game against West Ham United on Monday.

He later came on as a substitute for Harry Gray at the one-hour mark, although the West Yorkshire outfit only named him as a “trialist” on their website.

Oakley Cannonier set for Liverpool departure

Cannonier is highly regarded in Liverpool’s youth setup, having racked up many goals, including an impressive hat-trick in a 4-0 win against Ajax Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League in September 2022, for them.

However, the Leeds-born striker’s hopes of breaking into Arne Slot’s first-team setup appear bleak as things stand, especially due to Jayden Danns’ rise.

Danns, who is a year younger than Cannonier, has already made eight senior appearances for the Merseyside-based club, notching three goals in the process.

Having impressed in the handful of cameo appearances he has received, Danns has made a strong case to make his full debut for the Reds this season.

Therefore, it is hard to see Cannonier making his way into the senior squad at Anfield any time soon and it is better for him to continue his development elsewhere.

Leeds United are definitely a good option for him as he was born in Leeds.

The Whites are also known for providing a pathway to youth players.
