Liverpool v Ipswich: Andy Gray in disbelief at what Slot’s done at Anfield

Liverpool manager Arne Slot left Andy Gray in disbelief with his team selection against Ipswich on Saturday.

Luis Diaz was selected over Darwin Nunez despite the latter’s last-gasp brace that secured victory at Brentford last Saturday (18 January).

Gray did not agree with the decision to allow the Colombia international to lead the line at Anfield against the Tractor Boys on 25 January.

Speaking on beIN SPORTS [25 January, 14:57 pm], he said: “I honestly thought, I really did, that Nunez would get a start. I really think Arne Slot missed a trick there.”

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez unlucky to not start

The Uruguayan was unlucky not to be selected in the starting line-up for Saturday’s clash with the relegation strugglers after his starring display against the Bees.

Kieran McKenna’s side will likely employ a low block in an attempt to stifle the Reds, so Nunez would have been perfect for the contest.

His ability to get in-behind and his hold-up play would have allowed Slot’s side to break through the Ipswich line with ease.

However, he will be forced to wait for another opportunity from the bench to make an impact on proceedings like last weekend to try and revive his Anfield career.

With the Reds leading due to a Dominik Szoboszlai strike in the 11th minute and a Mohamed Salah goal in the 35th minute, Slot will not be too concerned about his decision.

However, that could change if the Merseysiders find themselves needing Nunez to rescue them once again later in the clash.
