Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group buying the Boston Celtics NBA franchise could be a positive, Dan Plumley says.

Reds supporters were concerned that a potential deal would impact their contract negotiations with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Plumley, a football finance expert, admitted it would bring massive commercial opportunities and leverage for the Reds around the world.

Speaking exclusively to Liverpool News, he said: “I would view it as a positive.

“I think ultimately, if you look at the makeup of that group, it is multi-club ownership in multi-sports and this would be another layer to that.

“You can see the opportunity for commercial partnerships, for brand leverage, I think it is a model that a lot of people are very envious of and I would think that would only benefit Liverpool.

“They are certainly still viewed as the flagship operation of that group, having a tie-in with another huge NBA franchise for me, can only help with that, if you can get the leverage right, so I would see that purely in a positive way that if that deal does go through that you can start to unlock more benefits.”

FSG development will not impact Liverpool

John Henry and the rest of the ownership have come under criticism for the way that they chose to run the Merseyside club.

The Reds have been transformed into Champions League and Premier League winners under their control and the management of Jurgen Klopp.

However, supporters are unhappy with a lack of spending on the playing squad which is emphasised by the contract impasse with the star trio.

There were concerns that a bid for the Celtics would tighten the pursestrings further but both Plumley and Keiran Maguire have stated that the move would benefit the Reds.

It remains to be seen whether FSG enters the bidding race and what impact it has on the Anfield club.
