Mo Salah exit: Alan Shearer makes Liverpool admission – ‘I know one thing…’
Liverpool will struggle to replace Mo Salah should he leave Anfield at the end of the season, Alan Shearer has said.
Speaking on Commentary for Amazon Prime (21 January, 8:41pm) during the Reds’ Champions League clash with Lille, Shearer expressed his desire for opening goalscorer Salah to extend his stay at Anfield.
Arguing that the Egyptian can still score at a similar rate to his current output for another “three or four years”, Shearer was hopeful that Salah and Anfield higher-ups could agree a new contract.
He said: “I really hope he stays because he’s such a wonderful player. I’m pretty sure that these fans in here will be desperate for him to stay – he keeps himself so fit and looks after himself.
“There’s plenty of time he’s got left. There’s no doubt he can score a stack more goals in the next three or four years. I don’t know what the issues are, why he hasn’t signed, how much you want to pay him.
“But I know one thing – if he has to leave, they’re not gonna get anyone in as good as him for a while.”
Mo Salah form leaves rivals wanting him to extend Liverpool stay
While Shearer will avoid going down partisan lines when on live commentary of Reds games, he’d be the first to acknowledge that taking a pure goalscorer out of any side would weaken them significantly.
Having already seen Salah open the scoring against Lille after 34 minutes – his third in the Champions League and 22nd in all competitions so far this term – Shearer recognised a true master of his craft.

One lethal goalscorer hailing the efforts of another is nothing new, but given Shearer is a Newcastle United legend and staunch fan, you’d expect him to quietly wish for a Salah-less Liverpool in the future.
Newcastle are a club with title ambitions of their own in the coming years and have the financial backing to match, and are also owned by the same group controlling the Saudi Pro League clubs chasing Salah.
Should Salah make the switch to the Middle East, Shearer will have his fingers crossed for a sensational loan move to Newcastle, but even he’d find it strange to see Salah in anything other than Liverpool red.
In other Liverpool news, Reds fans reacted to the “sinister” prospect of FSG selling the club to the world’s richest man.
