Liverpool transfer on cards as Carragher makes ‘brilliant’ Darwin Nunez reveal
Darwin Nunez has not done enough to secure a future at Liverpool, according to Jamie Carragher.
The Uruguay international was the hero for the Reds on Saturday (18 January) as he grabbed a brace off the bench to earn his side a 2-0 win, but Carragher believes his future at Anfield is still in doubt.
He is of the view that the Merseyside-based club will offload Nunez in the summer, although his “brilliant” record as a substitute could see him play an important role in the title race this season.
Asked if Nunez has done enough to stay at Anfield on Sky Sports News‘ Monday Night Football (20 January), Carragher said: “No. Maybe not right now, but I wouldn’t imagine that he’d be a the club next season.
“I don’t know, I’m not privy to those conversations, but listen, when you spend that type of money on a striker and he’s not first choice…
“He’s probably third choice, I’d imagine now. It looks like Jota, when he’s fit, and Luis Diaz as well are probably picked before him at the top end of the pitch.
“That probably just shows you that it hasn’t gone as well as he would have liked and Liverpool would have liked, really.
“But, he’s got a brilliant record coming off from the bench. I think since he’s joined the club, he’s got more goals and assists than anybody in the Premier League from the bench.
“So, maybe that’s his role from now till the end of the season and that can help Liverpool get over the line.”
Darwin Nunez to prove Jamie Carragher at Liverpool?
Nunez has been an intriguing figure since he joined Liverpool from Benfica for a deal worth £85million in 2022 [Sky Sports].
The 25-year-old has glimpses of how dangerous he can be, as he did in the 2-0 win against Brentford at the weekend, but his inconsistency in front of goal has often been frustrating.
With Nunez getting halfway through his six-year contract, the Reds have a decision to make regarding his long-term future.
The Merseyside-based club should either cut their losses on the Uruguayan and sell him this year or continue backing him at Anfield.
Therefore, Nunez has until the end of the season to prove his worth to the decision-makers at AXA.

If he continues producing performances as he did on Saturday, there is every chance that he will prove Carragher wrong.
However, the Liverpool faithful should be wary of getting their hopes high as this would not be the first time Nunez made everyone believe he has found his breakthrough.
