Liverpool ‘must cut ties’ with Diogo Jota as new update emerges from Anfield

Arne Slot will never be able to rely on Diogo Jota at Liverpool.

Since arriving from Wolves in 2020, the Portuguese international has missed 425 days of first-team action due to several injuries.

His impact on the pitch is incredible – he scored seven minutes after his introduction to secure a 2-2 draw against Fulham on 14 December and followed that up with another goal less than a minute after replacing Ibrahima Konate in the 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest last week.

However, his injury woes have reached a new low this year – despite only playing 24 minutes of the draw at the City Ground, he missed the 2-0 win against Brentford last weekend and is expected to remain out of the side for the Champions League clash against Lille [James Pearce].

It is time for Slot and Richard Hughes to sit down for a difficult conversation regarding Jota’s future at Anfield.

Liverpool should sell Diogo Jota

How often will Jota restore faith in the Liverpool supporters before disappointing them with another injury layoff?

When the 27-year-old suffered his first injury of the year in the 2-1 win against Chelsea on 20 October, he was expected to have only sustained a minor issue – he didn’t return for the Reds until he scored the goal against Fulham.

Far too many times throughout his Anfield career, he has suffered an injury setback when his teammates need him most; at this rate, he is making infamous Liverpool signing Naby Keita look like The Terminator.

Although he remains a beloved figure among the supporters, the tide is starting to turn as it becomes apparent he will never be available long enough to have a lasting impact on Merseyside.

He is, without a doubt, the most prolific finisher in the squad, and that is what makes his continued absence all the more frustrating.

What is the point of having a player of his quality in the squad if he is never available for a prolonged period of time?

Darwin Nunez may have restored some faith in his ability to come good at Anfield after his match-winning brace against Brentford, but even he still has a long way to go before he proves he is the man to lead the line for years to come.

This Liverpool side is one world-class centre-forward away from dominating English and European football.

While Jota had once promised to be the man, it is time for all involved to come to the bleak realisation that he will never keep himself fit.

Jota is a beloved figure at Anfield, but the team’s needs must come first, and unfortunately, his time with the Reds should soon come to an end.
