Darwin Nunez labelled ‘Stupid’ after what he did in Liverpool win v Brentford
Liverpool ace Darwin Nunez has been slammed by Stephen Warnock for the “stupid” challenge he made on Nathan Collins late on in their Premier League clash on Saturday.
The Reds left the Gtech Community Stadium as 2-0 victors thanks to the Uruguayan’s efforts at the end of the game, but that didn’t stop Warnock from scalding the striker.
Nunez initially lost the ball when he was on the attack and in Brentford’s box and after he’d got back up again, his challenge on Collins was late which resulted in him planting his boot into the defender’s foot.
Speaking live on Sky Sports News (20 January), Warnock shared his verdict on whether it was a challenge worthy of a second yellow card.
“I think it’s clumsy, I really do, and it’s a part of his game that he has to improve because I think the first booking is for taking his shirt off then you do that clumsily,” Warnock said.
“You think you’re on the crest of a wave at the moment after scoring a couple of goals but you could be suspended for a game off the back of doing something so stupid, and then you don’t get your opportunity.
“But he’s a very, very lucky boy – it should have been a second yellow.”
Darwin Nunez needs to prove his worth to Liverpool
The 2024/25 season has seemed to be a fairly difficult one for Nunez to get a grasp of.
The attacker has been left out of Arne Slot’s plans for most of the season, with the Dutchman preferring the likes of Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo over the former Benfica man.
And due to the attacker being out of favour recently, some links have surfaced with an Anfield exit for the attacker, with some fans agreeing that would be the best course of action.
However, after the attacker managed to earn all three points for Liverpool thanks to his brace at the end of the game, it feels like now is the time for him to prove he deserves to be a part of Slot’s team.
When the injury-proneness of Diogo Jota is also taken into account, it’s hard to see how the Reds could afford to let the 25-year-old exit any time soon, despite the amount of chaos he brings to the club.
