Liverpool can replace Alexander-Arnold with ‘earth-shattering’ transfer

Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool for Real Madrid at the end of his contract or that’s certainly how it is starting to feel.

The Reds rejected an official approach from the La Liga giants on 31 December, as per Andy Hunter, as president Florentino Perez brought out the big guns to bring Trent to Spain.

Although a pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid has yet to be agreed [Sky Sports], the radio silence from Anfield regarding a contract extension is telling.

Therefore, Richard Hughes and co. must become proactive rather than reactive and look for suitable replacements should the seemingly inevitable outcome prove true.

And the perfect replacement is indeed available for transfer and on the radar at Anfield as Sky Sports journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported on Monday (13 January) that negotiations have begun with Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich with the Reds willing to sanction a £21million move to make the deal happen in the winter transfer window.

Liverpool must replace Trent Alexander-Arnold with Joshua Kimmich

What goes around comes around, and should Trent leave at the end of his contract, Liverpool must bring Kimmich to Anfield as his replacement.

With Conor Bradley also in the first team fold and developing, there is no need to seek another prospect to battle it out with the Northern Ireland international for the right-back spot.

Arne Slot would benefit more from a seasoned professional with a track record of winning titles to help kick-start the new era under the Dutchman at Anfield – it would be an earth-shattering move for the Premier League.

It is worth noting that, barring Federico Chiesa, this is still very much a Jurgen Klopp side, and FSG should give Slot the required backing to put his stamp on the team.

Regardless of the supporters’ views on Trent, the sooner everyone comes to terms with the fact that this will be his last year at Anfield, the better.

While it can be considered a lazy perspective to attribute too much meaning to his woeful display against Manchester United, it is difficult to ignore what is staring everyone in the face – his head has been turned.

Fine. If you want to go, then go. Follow in Michael Owen’s footsteps – it worked out pretty well for him in Madrid.

His exit will sting with the supporters for a long time, but acquiring Kimmich, a serial winner who can operate across the backline and in midfield instead, would go a long way in easing the blow.
