Liverpool ‘guaranteed Premier League title’ with one transfer – Carragher

Jamie Carragher is almost certain Liverpool can guarantee the Premier League title by signing a left-side defender in the winter transfer window.

The Reds are top of the Premier League but have dropped points in four of their last seven matches allowing Arsenal to close the gap to four points.

After the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on 14 January, Carragher urged the Reds to enter the transfer market and sign a defender.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast (16 January), the Reds legend outlined what his former club should do, saying: “Liverpool haven’t got a player that every other club has, it is a left-sided defender who can play centre-back or left-back.

“Arsenal have got Calafiori, United have got Martinez, Chelsea have got Colwill, City have got Nathan Ake and Gvardiol, even Tottenham have got Van de Ven, who can do a little bit of left-back.

“I think if Liverpool sign that player in January, I think if Liverpool did that, I’d be almost certain they win the league.”

Panic stations for Liverpool?

It is not quite panic stations for Liverpool just yet, despite a poor run of form in the last few weeks.

The underlying numbers are favourable, in three of the four matches that they dropped points in, the expected goals (xG) tally was firmly in their favour.

Against Fulham, Manchester United, and Nottingham Forest, the Merseysiders recorded 6.94xG compared to just 2.58 from their opponents. [Fotmob]

Signing the type of player that Carragher suggested would definitely benefit the Anfield outfit, they need more defensive solidarity from their full-backs with Andy Robertson struggling to maintain his performance level.

The Merseysiders have been linked with a swoop for Bournemouth ace Milos Kerkez, with the player understood to favour a move to Anfield ahead of Manchester City and Manchester United. [iNews]

If they could secure his signature this month, that would go a long way to securing the title in Arne Slot’s first season on English shores.
