Merson shocked by ‘phenomenal’ Forest v Liverpool moment – ‘I can’t believe it’
Paul Merson couldn’t believe his own eyes when Chris Wood put Nottingham Forest 1-0 up against Liverpool at the City Ground on Tuesday night.
Despite dominating the opening phases of play in the East Midlands, Arne Slot’s side went a goal down after a brilliant finish by in-form striker Wood.
The 33-year-old New Zealand international slotted home his 13th goal of the Premier League campaign after a devastating counter-attack and a superbly-placed pass by Anthony Elanga.

Sky Sports’ Merson was shocked by how Forest managed to turn the tide at the City Ground to put the league leaders behind.
“It’s 1-0 to Forest and the place has erupted. Unbelievable,” said Merson on Sky Sports News (08:07pm, 14 January).
“I just said that this is the most one-sided football match I’ve ever seen. It was all Liverpool – [Forest] hadn’t even been out of their half in the first eight minutes.
“All of a sudden, the ball comes here to Elanga. He gets it, plays a lovely ball to Wood and he gets it and drills it across the goal into the far corner.
“Phenomenal finish. I can’t believe they are 1-0 up. They’ve been ripped to shreds for eight minutes and they’re 1-0 up.”
Wood’s 13th goal of the season means he’ll be closing down on Mohamed Salah in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot if the Liverpool forward doesn’t turn things around in this match.
As it stands, Salah is the Premier League’s top scorer with 18 goals.
Erling Haaland (16) is next while Cole Palmer has netted his 14th of the season in Chelsea’s clash against Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
In other Liverpool news, the Reds are being tipped to seal a major January signing.
