Liverpool sign off on documents for free transfer – Fabrizio Romano
Liverpool have finalised the documentation to sell Marcelo Pitaluga to Fluminense, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Writing via his personal X account on Sunday morning (5 January), Romano reported that while there’s no transfer fee involved in the 22-year-old goalkeeper’s return to Brazil, there is a 40 per cent sell-on clause tied into the deal that means the Reds could profit from him in the future.
Pitaluga was signed from Fluminense in 2020 but he’s been out on three different loan spells, most recently at Livingston in the Scottish Championship.
Liverpool agree January transfer
It makes sense for Liverpool to get rid of Pitaluga.
It’s a shame for the Brazilian but his time in the UK simply hasn’t worked out.
He was signed for £2million in 2020 and he did make some first-team squads on initial matchdays.
However, two years later he was sent out on loan to the eighth tier of English football to join Macclesfield before he was then farmed out to the League Of Ireland’s St Patrick’s Athletic.
If you’re being loaned to teams in those types of leagues by Liverpool, there’s a good chance you’re never going to make it there.
A summer loan move to Livingston, in the Scottish second tier, represented a move up for the Brazilian shot-stopper. However, that’s been met by the fact he’s played just twice with both appearances being in Scottish Challenge Cup.
Fluminense are a big Brazilian club so it’s unlikely that Pitaluga will break into their senior squad and perhaps less likely that Liverpool will make any money from that sell-on clause in the future.
