Liverpool flop Federico Chiesa lined up for January Anfield exit

Federico Chiesa could be set to leave Liverpool on loan in January, according to Calciomercato.

The Italian outlet reported on 31 December that the Reds are open to sanctioning a loan move for the 27-year-old, who has failed to impress so far.

The report claims that AS Roma, Atalanta, AC Milan, Napoli, and Internazionale are interested in bringing the former Juventus man back to Italy on a temporary basis just four months after he arrived on Merseyside.

It also states that Chiesa’s agent, Fali Ramadani, is set to meet with the Anfield hierarchy in the next few days to assess the situation.

Liverpool gamble has not paid off

The Reds signed the Italian in a £12.5 million deal in the summer as a back-up for Mohamed Salah.

The move was seen as a worthwhile gamble given the quality of the player and the small fee in the modern game.

If Arne Slot could unlock the form that Chiesa had shown in the past before his injury issues then it would be regarded as a bargain move and allow Salah some much-needed rest.

However, that has not been the case and the Italy international has featured just four times in all competitions for a total of 123 minutes after struggling constantly with injury issues.

It is hard to see the forward getting consistent game time in Slot’s attack given the form of Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Salah so far this season and his fitness issues.

A loan move back to Italy could allow him to recover from his injury and come back to Merseyside in full fitness for the start of the next season.
