Owen reveals ‘secretive’ talks for ‘huge’ Liverpool deal after Ornstein update
Michael Owen has claimed that Real Madrid will have held “secretive” talks with Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold after an update from David Ornstein.
The Athletic journalist reported (31 December) that the Reds have rejected an official approach from Los Blancos for the 26-year-old whose contract expires in the summer.
He added that there has not been an actual bid yet but Madrid are willing to pay a fee for the English international and the Reds will talk to the player’s representatives shortly.
Owen moved from Merseyside to Madrid and believes that a deal could be close, saying in a post on X: “The very fact that Real Madrid have now made their intentions clear towards signing Trent Alexander Arnold leads me to believe that it’s only a matter of time before he signs for them.
“If he was going to sign a contract extension, Madrid wouldn’t have officially made their move.
“Secretive talks will have taken place. Huge news.”
Huge blow for Liverpool
Regardless of if Alexander-Arnold leaves for a fee or nothing, it will be a major blow for the Anfield side.
The academy product has won every major honour with his boyhood club and it is understandable if he wants to experience a new challenge.
However, he would crush his legacy on Merseyside as Owen has in the years following his departure if he moved to the Spanish capital.

It was negligible from owners Fenway Sports Group to let the situation get to a stage where the player is free to negotiate with foreign clubs from 1 January, a deal should have already been secured.
Replacing a generational talent, that is one of the best players in world football with the ball at his feet will be a huge challenge for Arne Slot and his coaching team, even if Conor Bradley has impressed in limited appearances so far this seaosn.
Right now, the challenge is to persuade the local lad to resist the temptation of leaving for the 15-time European Champions but it seems like a futile effort.
In other Liverpool news, the Reds should recall a youth ace from a disappointing loan spell.
