Kelleher exit: Newcastle make move for Liverpool goalkeeper after Howe decision

Caoimhin Kelleher could be set to leave Liverpool with Newcastle stepping up their interest, according to Ben Jacobs.

The report from TEAMTalk [27 December] claims that the Irish goalkeeper believes that he is capable of being a first-choice goalkeeper for an elite club.

It also states that Magpies boss Eddie Howe would like a young replacement for Nick Pope, who has struggled with injury this season leading to interest in Kelleher.

The 25-year-old impressed in Alisson’s absence and is likely to be the Reds’ third-choice behind the Brazilian and summer arrival Giorgi Marmadashvili next season.

Liverpool will allow Kelleher to leave

Despite the Irish international stepping up while Alisson was injured, it is believed that the Reds would allow him to leave.

He will find himself below both the 32-year-old and the Georgian in the pecking order next season at Anfield so an exit makes sense for all parties.

Marmadashvili is seen as the long-term successor to the Brazilian and is set to compete for a starting role upon his arrival on Merseyside.

Kelleher is ready to test himself as a number one and will not get that chance under Arne Slot but he could at Newcastle.

The Reds will likely have no choice but to cash in on the youth product and could secure a healthy fee to reinvest in the playing squad.

The Irish stopper will go down in Liverpool history after his exploits in penalty shoot-outs in the FA Cup and EFL Cup final wins in 2022 and his exit will be bittersweet for the Anfield faithful.
