View: Slot to axe dismal Nunez, seven changes – Liverpool predicted XI v Tottenham

Arne Slot could make seven changes to his Liverpool starting line-up when they travel to Tottenham on Sunday.

Darwin Nunez is likely to be dropped to the bench despite scoring in the 2-1 EFL Cup victory over Southampton (18 December) after another poor general display.

Harvey Elliott, Tyler Morton and debutant Trey Nyoni are all expected to be axed after their exploits in midweek with only Alexis Mac Allister keeping his place in the engine room.

Several changes are likely in the backline with Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson all expected to return at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (22 December) as the Reds seek to get back to winning ways in their Premier League title challenge.

Arne Slot confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konate are not ready to return yet.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was taken off at half-time in the EFL Cup contest and is expected to start against the Lilywhites, he recorded an 87 per cent pass accuracy, created one chance, made three recoveries, two interceptions and won four of his five overall duels against the Premier League bottom-dwellers.

Virgil van Dijk was rested for the midweek contest but is predicted to be back at the heart of the Reds’ defence against Spurs.

He might be partnered by Joe Gomez, who was deployed at left-back against the Saints and recorded a 94 per cent pass accuracy, made 12 passes into the final third, made three recoveries but only won one out of the four total duels he contested.

Andy Robertson is likely to return after his suspension for the red card that he received against Fulham last weekend (14 December).

In midfield, Alexis Mac Allister is expected to retain his place in the starting line-up after being replaced in the 63rd minute on Wednesday, he recorded an 89 per cent pass accuracy, created one chance, made four passes into the final third and one recovery.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch are predicted to return against Ange Postecoglou’s side after being rested in midweek.

Nunez to be dropped from Reds front-line

Darwin Nunez is likely to be axed from the starting line-up despite scoring the opener in the Southampton clash.

The Uruguayan forward was poor in the contest despite his goal, recording a 71 per cent pass accuracy, just 23 touches, two touches in the opposition box in the contest and completing just one of four dribble attempts.

Luis Diaz is expected to get the nod up front after Diogo Jota suffered an injury setback against Fulham that limited him to a 27 minute cameo against the Saints.

Cody Gakpo is likely to start on the left flank, he notched an assist in midweek and recorded an 80 per cent pass accuracy and created four chances.

A victory over Postecoglou’s team could lift the Reds to a five-point margin at the summit of the Premier League if other results go their way.

They will be looking to return to winning ways in the league following successive draws to Newcastle and Fulham.
