View: Liverpool must sort 100% Alexander-Arnold deal as soon as possible

Liverpool must sort out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation as soon as possible after the 2-0 victory against Manchester City.

The 26-year-old, whose contract expires next summer, was immense as Arne Slot’s side increased their margin at the top of the Premier League to nine points against Pep Guardiola’s defending champions.

He played an integral part in the opening goal with a stunning pass to Mohamed Salah before the Egyptian found Cody Gakpo, while he was also defensively solid.

The academy product will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs in a month and the Reds must do everything they can to ensure he stays on Merseyside.

Trent Alexander-Arnold should spend whole career at Liverpool

The 33-cap England international has forged a reputation as one of the best playmakers in world football since he broke into the Reds’ first team in 2016.

He has won everything with his boyhood club, including the Champions League in the 2018-19 season and the Premier League in the 2019-20 season, but he could leave for a new challenge if a new deal is not worked out soon. The right-back free to agree a pre-contract with a European rival from 1 January.

Since Alexander-Arnold made his Premier League debut, he has created 404 chances, the most by a defender in that time, and 93 more than his teammate Andy Robertson.

He also has the joint-most assists by a defender in the history of the competition with 59, level with the Scot.

Against Guardiola’s side he highlighted why the likes of Real Madrid are interested in securing his signature as he created two chances, had five passes into the final third and completed three accurate long balls out of five attempted. [Fotmob]

He won 100 per cent of his four tackles (the most tackles in the match), made six recoveries and won five of his 11 ground duels for a 45 per cent success rate as Slot’s side demolished the defending champions.

There have been questions about his defensive abilities throughout his career but he has excelled this season, perhaps at the expense of his attacking output.

In terms of his contributions going forward, it was his most influential game yet under the new head coach and the Reds must extend their homegrown star to see how much the Dutchman can get out of him.

In other Liverpool news, one academy talent may get his senior debut sooner rather than later.
