Scottish media react to Liverpool star Andy Robertson international display – ‘Stretched at times’
Liverpool star Andy Robertson earned rave reviews after scoring a last-gasp winner in Scotland’s 2-1 victory over Poland.
The 30-year-old has split opinion with his performances at club level so far this season with some observers suggesting that Arne Slot should reinforce his options on the left side of his defence.
But the experienced Robertson had a moment to remember in Monday’s (18 November) Nations League contest.
The Scotsman [18 November] gave the Reds left-back an 8.5/10 rating, saying: “Won his 80th cap in Warsaw, joining Darren Fletcher in third place for all-time appearances. Came close just before the break with an effort that was deflected over.
“Stretched at times defensively, the Liverpool man looked to be suffering from an injury from 60 minutes onwards but cajoled the team on until the very end, popping up at the far post to head home in stoppage time. A proper captain’s moment.”
Scottish outlet The Herald awarded Robertson a slightly lower 8/10 rating, saying: “What a way to mark his 80th cap for the country! The Liverpool defender is now joint third in the all-time list and is only 22 national team appearances off Kenny Dalglish’s record.
“He scored the winning goal with a bullet header in stoppage time. Enjoyed a much better night than Friday – he was everything you’d expect of him. His passing was generally spot on until the closing stages when his decision-making came into question.”
Robertson needs to step up for Liverpool
It appeared as though Scotland would be relegated from Nations League group A1 as the 93rd minute ticked by and the scores level but Robertson ensured otherwise with his bullet header at the back post.
His performances for his country have been excellent across the last two international breaks helping to seal important results like the victories against Poland and Croatia and a draw against Portugal.
However, his form at club level has been a far cry from the lofty standards that he set during the majority of the Jurgen Klopp era at Liverpool.

Reports of the Reds interest in Bournemouth’s Miloz Kerkez are no surprise given that neither Robertson or his replacement Kostas Tsmikas have impressed under new head coach Arne Slot.
Robertson is now in the twilight of his career with the club and it makes sense to look for a younger alternative that can have a similar impact to the Scotsman when he first came to the club.
The veteran can still be a solid performer for the Reds but it is clear that his best days are behind him and he no longer possesses the duel-threat abilities that he used to in his prime.
