Federico Chiesa injury update emerges ahead of Liverpool v Southampton

Liverpool attacker Federico Chiesa is unlikely to start against Southampton due to a muscle injury, according to Dr Rajpal Brar.

The injury expert claims that for the Italian to be available for the game at St Mary’s on 24 November, he will need to have had a few sessions in full first-team training.

Closer to the match, the 27-year-old would then have to clear a fitness test to prove he’s ready to return to first-team football.

Speaking about this situation, Dr Brar, a doctor in physical therapy and a sports scientist, told Liverpool News: “Liverpool were optimistic of having him back after the international break so it’s all on how the last couple of weeks have been for him.

“He’s been out with a muscle injury and hasn’t quite got up to speed with the English game yet.

“That said, if he’s back in first-team training, had a few sessions and has been cleared by the medical staff and clears a late fitness test, he’ll be ready to play some minutes over the weekend.

“Highly unlikely he’s ready to play the full 90 or start, at this stage.”

Federico Chiesa has barely featured for Liverpool

Since joining from Juventus, the Italian has played just three games for the Reds in all competitions.

His only start has been in a League Cup game against West Ham in September, in which he provided an assist.

Arne Slot will be hoping that he can contribute more in the coming weeks and months and be an asset in the final third.
