View: 96% Curtis Jones shows his Liverpool worth again on England duty, pundit was blown away

Leon Osman was in awe of Liverpool star Curtis Jones as he scored for England on his senior debut in the 3-0 win against Greece.

Lee Carsley handed the 23-year-old his first senior cap at the Olympic Stadium in Athens on Thursday night [14 November] and rewarded the boss for his faith with his goal to round off a comprehensive result in the UEFA Nations League.

Osman waxed lyrical about the midfielder’s display live on BBC Radio 5 Live [14 November, 9:35pm], in a “wonderful” first outing for the national side.

He said: “Curtis Jones has looked very assured in the middle of the pitch, has looked composed particularly when receiving the ball in his own area, he is unflustered, defended excellently and scored a back heel to top it all off. Wonderful evening for him.”

Curtis Jones is undroppable for Liverpool

Jones has emerged as a crucial cog in Arne Slot’s side at Anfield this season and supporters will be relieved to finally see the Scouser’s efforts rewarded on the international stage.

While Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch have cemented themselves as regular starters in the midfield, the number 10 role has become a cause for concern for Slot.

Dominik Szoboszlai has continued to fly under the radar when selected to start but, Jones has well and truly made the position his own since his game-winning goal in the 2-1 win against Chelsea.

Furthermore, Jones continued his stellar club form on the biggest stage completing 96 per cent of his passes against Greece and scoring his goal via one shot on target, resulting in a 100 per cent shot conversion rate [Sofascore].

Jones operated in the double pivot alongside Conor Gallagher and played the role to perfection, winning four tackles, 70 per cent of his duels and completing 33 per cent of his dribbles, drawing two fouls when progressing the ball further up the pitch.

His form has helped propel Liverpool to the top of the Premier League and the Champions League and he has firmly placed himself alongside Mac Allister and Gravenberch to complete the preferred midfield trio for Slot.

However, Jones has been prone to purple patches in the past and suffers a tremendous drop-off in form when out on the other side – although this time around has a different feel and this could be the year Jones announces himself to the world.
