Liverpool eye Premier League duo in Salah succession plan – report

Bryan Mbuemo and Antoine Semenyo are among the list of candidates considered to replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, according to Sky Sports.

The news outlet reported on Saturday [2 November] via its website that the Premier League duo are currently being assessed by the scouting department, with their profiles deemed a similar build to the Egyptian.

Salah has entered the final year of his Anfield contract alongside Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold and, while there is no indication of where his future lies, the Reds are seemingly planning for the worst-case scenario.

Liverpool planning for life without Mohamed Salah

Liverpool fans descended into a panic after the 3-0 win against Manchester United in September as Salah offered an ominous verdict on his future, declaring he is playing with the view this is his “last year at the club”.

The longer the contract saga drags on, the longer this becomes a reality, and the reported interest in Mbuemo and Semenyo suggests the Reds may be willing to allow Salah to call time on his Anfield career at the end of the season.

No Liverpool supporter needs to be reminded this would be a catastrophic error by the club. At 32, he is producing ridiculous numbers in the Premier League with six goals and five assists in nine outings this term.

Should the Reds decide to go in a different direction, the club has risen levels above the Jurgen Klopp side that first signed the Egyptian in 2017, so two players playing for midtable Premier League sides will not cut it.

To replace the goal contributions Salah has given the side over the years, no like-for-like replacement is suitable. A wide player who can offer 20 goals a year and an elite centre-forward who can surpass 30 goals per season would be the only desirable outcome.

Given the backlash from the supporters following an underwhelming summer transfer window, the decisions made in the next few months will define the new Anfield regime.

Confidence is low that FSG will offer the required funds for what could be a historic rebuild on Merseyside.

Or better yet, give Salah, Van Dijk and Trent whatever they are asking for and put an end to the charade.
