Jamie Carragher predicts scoreline of ‘big’ Liverpool v Chelsea clash

Jamie Carragher has predicted Liverpool will continue their winning form in the Premier League against Chelsea on Sunday (20 October).

The Reds are top of the Premier League heading into the restart after six wins from the opening seven fixtures and host Enzo Maresca’s side in Arne Slot’s “first big test” at Anfield, in the view of Carragher.

Carragher said he expects his former employers to win 2-0 again against Chelsea when sharing his Premier League predictions for Sky Sports’ Super 6 [17 October].

He said: “It is Liverpool’s first big test of the season but they’ve been helped with Chelsea missing two of their first-choice defenders.

“That’ll be enough for Liverpool to come out on top in this one I think.”

Liverpool will need to be at their best against high-flying Chelsea

The Reds marched to a resounding 4-1 win against Chelsea at Anfield last season but will be wise not to underestimate their opponents this time.

Cole Palmer has shown no signs of slowing down after an incredible maiden campaign in West London last term. His side looks rejuvenated under Maresca as the billions of pounds worth of talent seemingly have a sense of direction at last.

The Blues will have been sick of the sight of Liverpool last season. Only weeks after the demolition job at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp won his third final against Chelsea in two years with a 1-0 win in the Carabao Cup.

However, with both sides having new managers in the dugout, the clash is harder to call than in recent years and three points are not guaranteed this weekend. Indeed, Slot will need to execute a perfect game plan.

Caoimhin Kelleher has been in sensational form for the Republic of Ireland throughout the international break, and there could be no better opponent for the 25-year-old to begin his extended run in the first team after thwarting Chelsea on multiple occasions.

Liverpool, on paper, have a much stronger squad than their next opponents, but the loss against Nottingham Forest proves Slot cannot take Chelsea for granted as the Reds hopefully pick up where they left off in the Premier League.
