‘Unstoppable’, ‘Superb’ – Int’l media blown away by what Liverpool gem did for his country
Luis Diaz blew away Colombian media as the Liverpool star dazzled in the 4-0 win against Chile on Tuesday (15 October).
The 27-year-old scored the second goal for his side at the Roberto Melendez Metropolitan Stadium, with Colombia now well on track for World Cup qualification in the South American group.
Diaz has enjoyed a sensational start to life under Arne Slot at the Reds and seemingly took his form onto the international stage, providing another goal for his national team.
Futbolred [15 October] awarded Diaz a 7/10 rating, writing: “A great match from the man from whom most is expected in Barranquilla: deployment, projection, commitment and a partnership with the number 10 that is increasingly more productive. A nice goal and his smile at home remained in the memory.”
Meanwhile, El Tiempo [16 October] was even more impressed with the forward’s display, awarding an 8/10 rating and writing: “He balanced the team with his feints and made some very good passes. The goal was a reward for his sacrifice.”
El Heraldo [16 October] agreed with the rating, writing: “Superb match. Participatory, with a lot of balance. He was almost always unstoppable on his side and scored a goal.”
Luis Diaz could have a breakout season at Liverpool
The Reds are flying in the Premier League under Slot. With six wins from the opening seven matches, his side sit at the top of the league heading into a crucial match against Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday [20 October].
Diaz has been one of the main beneficiaries of the managerial change with five goals and one assist thus far, and is only three goals shy of matching his goal tally for the entirety of last season.
His rejuvenated form at Liverpool is exactly what was expected from him when he moved to Merseyside from Porto in 2022. While it may be nearly two years since he arrived in the Premier League, it is better late than never.
Cody Gakpo is another who has finally found his feet at Anfield this year. The Dutchman has slowly been replicating the form shown for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 and is hot on the Colombian’s heels in the fight for a starting berth on the left flank.

Whether the increased competition has led to this new-found goalscoring form, or the constant speculation linking Anthony Gordon with a return to the red half of Merseyside, matters not. Slot has finally unlocked the potential all Liverpool supporters knew Diaz could fulfil.
The Reds have been crying out for a forward to match the goal output of Mohamed Salah since Sadio Mane’s departure, and it seems finally Diaz has stepped up and is ready for a breakout season at Anfield.
