Liverpool youth midfielder Trey Nyoni is set to sign his first professional contract with the club, according to The Athletic.

The news outlet shared the update on Tuesday [15 October], with the 17-year-old set to commit his long-term future to the Reds.

Nyoni, who arrived at the AXA Training Centre from Leicester City in 2023, was the only academy player to be named in Arne Slot's pre-season squad this summer and has been impressing with his displays for the youth sides.

Trey Nyoni has a bright future at Liverpool

Ever since Slot ordered a mass exodus of the youth talent at Liverpool throughout the summer, the future of the current crop of academy stars and their path to the first team has looked uncertain.

Nyoni, however, is valued highly by the Dutchman and he selected the midfielder as part of his matchday squad for the 2-0 win against Bologna in the Champions League, albeit he remained on the bench.

The England U18 international made first-team bow for the Reds last season under Jurgen Klopp in the 3-0 win against Southampton in the FA Cup and he has seemingly continued on his upward trajectory through the youth ranks.

Last term saw Bobby Clark, James McConnell and Jayden Danns handed extended runs in the first team after injuries to several key stars.

Fast forward to now and Clark has since joined Pep Lijnders at RB Salzburg and the others have yet to feature again this season.

Nyoni is seemingly the only youth player at the AXA Training Centre right now that Slot believes can make an impact this season.

His performances in pre-season offered only a glimpse of his quality and there is no doubt he will gain minutes at Anfield this year, presumably in cup competitions.

The contract is a sign of good faith from the Reds and shows Nyoni the club values his potential to become a future star. It is now up to him to continue his development and push for a first-team berth under Slot.
