Liverpool are plotting a sensational move for Benfica and former Manchester United left-back Alvaro Carreras, according to AS.

The Spanish news outlet reported on their website [12 October] that the Reds are showing the strongest interest in the full-back, who has been turning heads with his displays for Benfica this season.

Carreras, who came through the ranks at Old Trafford, completed a permanent switch from England this summer after the Portuguese giants activated the option to purchase in his loan deal for £5million.

Liverpool are reportedly in the market for a young left-back with the potential to become a star at Anfield, with Andy Robertson now entering his thirties.

Liverpool could shock the world and sign Alvaro Carreras

The Reds could secure the long-term future of the left-back position and boil the blood of their North-West rivals on the other side of the M62 in one move.

While no player of Liverpool or Manchester United has made the direct move to one another since Paul Chisnall arrived at Anfield for £25,000 in 1964, the Reds have had the better of players who have represented both sides.

Michael Owen, despite winning the Premier League, was a resounding failure at Old Trafford, while Paul Ince, who joined Liverpool via Inter Milan after six years at the Red Devils, was a beloved figure at Anfield throughout his two-year stint.

Arne Slot will be thinking about the future of his Reds side. Robertson has established himself as one of the best full-backs of the Premier League era but will surely slow down in the next few years as he enters the twilight period of his illustrious career.

Kostas Tsimikas has failed to nail down a starting berth at Liverpool and at 28 years old, it appears unlikely the Greek will be viewed as the long-term replacement for Robertson - a younger, more dynamic option is needed.

Carreras failed to break into the first team at Manchester United and has since come on leaps and bounds in Portugal. Should the 21-year-old be eager to return to England, he could do what Gabriel Heinze couldn't - become a success at Liverpool after a failed spell at their most fierce rivals.
