Ian Wright reacts to ‘Crazy’ FSG and Liverpool update on Trent Alexander-Arnold

Ian Wright has slammed Liverpool and Fenway Sports Group for allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to enter the final 12 months of his contract.

The 26-year-old, who enjoyed his birthday on international duty with England, has yet to put pen to paper on a deal extending his stay at Anfield.

Wright discussed the contract situation alongside co-pundit Roy Keane live on ITV 1 [10 October, 7:31pm] and couldn’t believe Liverpool have allowed Trent to run down his deal as he prepared to line up for England to face Greece at Wembley.

He said: “You can’t see anything happening in January for sure, especially the way Liverpool have started the season.

“But, for me, what he’s done for Liverpool up to this point, you know it’s different when people talk about Steve McManaman and Michael Owen, yeah they won League Cups and the European Cup and FA Cup but he’s won the lot.

“He’s won the Premier League, the Champions League, the World Club Cup, he’s won the FA Cup, he’s won the League Cup, he’s won everything. And, he’s done it at his hometown club.

“Liverpool and FSG have got themselves into a position where he’s going into his last year. It’s crazy.”

Serious questions need to be answered at Liverpool

Michael Edwards has serious questions to answer at Anfield as the Reds risk losing three of their prized assets for free at the end of the season.

Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are also in the final year of their contracts alongside Alexander-Arnold, and no apparent progress has been made on the negotiations two months into the new season.

The Reds have started remarkably well under Arne Slot. His side lead the Premier League heading into the international break and boast a 100 per cent record in the Champions League after two outings.

However, the uncertainty of whether Liverpool will achieve silverware this season following Jurgen Klopp’s departure remains and Alexander-Arnold has shared his desire to win will be a determining factor in deciding his future.

There is arguably no better place in football to win silverware than Real Madrid. The La Liga giants are monitoring the situation [Fabrizio Romano] and only time will tell whether the reported interest develops into a concrete move when the full-back is open to negotiate a transfer in January.

Liverpool cannot allow that to happen but only have themselves to blame. No top club should allow the most important players to run down their contract.

Should Alexander-Arnold sport the white of Real Madrid next season, no Liverpool fan will blame him but it would be a catastrophic error by the club and one they would surely live to regret.
