Liverpool Women handed another blow as Sofie Lundgaard injury update emerges

Liverpool Women have confirmed Sofie Lundgaard will undergo surgery on an injury sustained in the 3-2 win against Tottenham.

The 22-year-old was removed at half-time on Sunday [6 October] as Matt Beard picked up his first win in the Women’s Super League this season courtesy of a 95 minute penalty scored by Marie Hobinger at Brisbane Road.

Dr Amelia Woodhouse, Liverpool Women’s club doctor, revealed after the match to the club’s official website [8 October] that Lundgaard picked up an ACL injury that will require surgery.

She said: “Sofie’s scan results confirmed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, and she will be seeing the surgeon this week.

“She will now begin a period of rehabilitation with the support of everyone at the club.”

Liverpool Women could be without Sofie Lundgaard for rest of season

While Beard recorded an all-important first win in the WSL this season, he now faces the prospect of being without star midfielder Lundgaard for the rest of the campaign.

The Reds learned from their mistakes in front of goal on Sunday (6 October), and the win moves the side up to fifth place in the WSL, only trailing league leaders Manchester City by two points.

However, after pre-season injuries resulted in the club calling off a friendly with Manchester United, it seems Liverpool are unable to shake off their injury concerns this year.

Lundgaard has been ever-present for the Reds in midfield since her move from Fortuna Hjorring in 2022 and even though Hobinger, Fuka Nagano and Ceri Holland can all help fill the void, Beard needs his full-strength Liverpool side to deliver on his promise of WSL success this season.

The extent of her injury remains unknown but as always with ACL injuries, it likely means that the Danish international will not return to the pitch for the Reds again this season.

After a faulty start of two draws from their opening two matches, Liverpool are finally off to the races and cannot let the crushing news of Lundgaard’s lengthy absence affect the club moving forward.

In other Liverpool news, Steven Gerrard could still return to the Reds one day.
