Darren Bent: Steven Gerrard could still return to Liverpool one day

Darren Bent believes Steven Gerrard returning to Liverpool as a manager is still a possibility.

Gerrard made an impressive start to his managerial career as his Rangers side won the Scottish Premiership without losing a single game in the 2020-21 season.

The 44-year-old took the reins at Aston Villa in the same year and it appeared he was on course to eventually replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

However, Gerrard was sacked by Villa after they won only two of their opening 12 fixtures of the 2022-23 season and joined Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq in July 2023.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday (8 October), Bent said: “At Rangers, it was always ‘he [Gerrard] is going to be after Klopp [at Liverpool]’, ‘he’s going to be next’.

“And when he went to Villa and because it went so badly, I don’t quite know how close now Steven Gerrard is to getting that Liverpool job.

“I’m sure there would still be loads of Liverpool fans that would love to see him at some point back at that club, but I don’t know.

“Maybe, at some point, he will be there at Liverpool.”

Could Steven Gerrard return to Liverpool?

Gerrard spent 17 years of his playing career at Liverpool and a return to Anfield could be a dream for him, but how likely is it?

The Englishman was on the right track during his time at Rangers before his managerial credentials took a hit after his Aston Villa stint went awry.

Moving to Saudi Arabia has also not done his reputation any good, with Al-Ettifaq currently sitting eighth in the table.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have done a great job of replacing Klopp, who stepped down at the end of last season, by bringing in Arne Slot.

The Reds are sat atop the Premier League table, having picked up 18 points from a possible 21, and have won each of their three cup games so far.

Slot has also breathed new life into the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Luis Diaz, who have been instrumental for the Merseyside outfit this term.

With the Reds looking strong under Slot, a return to Anfield won’t be on the cards for Gerrard for the foreseeable future.
