Liverpool Women star buzzing for ‘Special’ occasion at Anfield next month

Gemma Bonner shared her “special” Liverpool Women verdict ahead of the upcoming clash against Manchester City at Anfield.

The Reds began their Women’s Super League campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Leicester City at the St Helens Stadium.

Bonner, who played the full 90 minutes in the WSL opener on Sunday [22 September], appeared at half-time on the pitch at Anfield during the men’s 5-1 win against West Ham United and previewed her side’s clash against the WSL rivals to be played at Anfield on 13 October.

She said, as per the club website [26 September]: “It’s an honour and a privilege to play at Anfield and we’re really excited about playing three games here this season.

“We really appreciate all the great support we get and the City game next month is our next home game. It’s going to be special.”

Liverpool credentials to be tested against Manchester City

Matt Beard will need his side to come firing straight out the blocks when they host Man City in a hugely important WSL clash at Anfield.

The Reds fell to a 2-1 loss in St Helens to the Blues in pre-season, a testament to how far the side has come throughout the summer in comparison to the 4-1 and 5-1 losses suffered when the sides met in the league last term.

Liverpool have a difficult away run of fixtures ahead, including an FA WSL Cup tie against Manchester United between WSL clashes against West Ham United and Tottenham, before Man City travel to Anfield.

Beard held nothing back in his verdict of the opening-day draw against Leicester and his side must gain momentum in the fixtures leading up to the clash against Man City, which will have massive ramifications on whether the Reds are ready to challenge at the top of the WSL this year.

Gareth Taylor’s side lost out on the title to Chelsea last season on goal difference and will be more determined than ever to right the wrongs and claim an early march in the title race after their 2-2 draw with Arsenal to start the campaign.

Liverpool must learn from the 2-1 loss in pre-season, find an answer to last season’s top goalscorer Khadija Shaw, and lay down an early statement of intent to their WSL rivals with an important three points at Anfield. It will not be an easy task.
