Curtis Jones is in contention to feature against Nottingham Forest after ramping up his training programme, according to the club's official website.

The 23-year-old is yet to feature this season, having been an unused substitute against Ipswich Town on the opening day before missing the matches against Brentford and Manchester United through injury.

Jones impressed Arne Slot through his efforts in pre-season and could be in line for contention when the Reds host Nottingham Forest on Saturday [14 September], with the club releasing new footage of him in training.

Curtis Jones return a welcome boost for Liverpool

It is one midfielder in, one out at Liverpool as Jones returns at the perfect time with Harvey Elliott expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks.

The Reds have been in sensational form at the start of the season, winning all three of their opening Premier League matches and keeping three clean sheets.

Ryan Gravenberch looks like a whole new player under Slot at the anchor of the midfield three and should be considered undroppable at the moment alongside Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Slot has a difficult decision to make elsewhere as Jones will be raring to go, but the match on the weekend will be too soon to reintegrate the Scouser into the starting lineup and at best, he will have to settle for a place on the bench.

The form of the current midfield trio means displacing them in the starting lineup will be even more difficult for the likes of Wataru Endo, Jones and a soon-to-return Elliott, as well as youngsters Tyler Morton and Trey Nyoni.

However, with Champions League football and the start of the Carabao Cup right around the corner, there will be plenty of opportunities for Slot to rotate his side and give the players on the fringes the opportunity to impress.

Jones has struggled to string together a consistent run of form in the first team during Jurgen Klopp's tenure and at 23, he is reaching the age where he needs to find a way to put the injuries behind him and start performing for the Reds.
