Leanne Kiernan shares Liverpool Women’s fan admission as contract news emerges
Liverpool Women’s forward Leanne Kiernan has revealed the supporters were a “massive” factor in her contract extension.
The Reds confirmed the news on their official website [9 September] with Kiernan committing her long-term future to the club.
Kiernan cited the fans as a crucial factor in her decision to extend her stay with the Reds in an interview with the club following her extension [9 September].
She said: “It’s massive, their support. Even when we are playing the friendlies behind closed doors, it’s just not the same without the fans. I just think they are a massive part of how well we did last season.
“Their support doesn’t go unnoticed whether you are on the pitch or not playing – they are really important. It’s very similar to the men’s team as it’s just one big family and it’s really enjoyable.”
Leanne Kiernan will have competition at Liverpool this season
The 25-year-old spent most of last season on the sidelines nursing a long-term injury but returned to the side towards the end of the Women’s Super League season scoring five goals.
She played an important role in the 2021/22 side with 13 goals in the title-winning campaign that secured the Reds’ return to the WSL.
Kiernan will need to replicate her end-of-season form last time out, at the start of the new season with competition in the attacking department for Matt Beard’s side the most competitive it has ever been.

The Reds broke their club-record transfer fee to sign Olivia Smith from Sporting CP and the 20-year-old has been excelling for Canada in the off-season at the U20 World Cup alongside forward signing Cornelia Kopacs from Linkoping FC, bringing with her a wealth of Champions League experience to the St Helens Stadium.
Mia Enderby enjoyed a productive U19 Women’s European Championship campaign with England this summer with two goals and one assist in three outings.
Kiernan is facing an uphill battle for minutes this season but, the Reds will need all the firepower they can get to challenge the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal at the top of the WSL and her contract extension has secured the future of the forward line for years to come.
