View: Lewis Koumas primed for big Liverpool future after international landmark

Liverpool forward Lewis Koumas was handed his first international start for Wales in the 2-1 win against Montenegro in the UEFA Nations League.

The 18-year-old completed 46 minutes on Monday [9 September] as Wales claimed their first victory of the tournament, courtesy of two goals inside the opening five minutes by Kieffer Moore and former Red Harry Wilson.

Koumas will spend the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Championship side Stoke City [BBC Sport] and he will need to impress in the second tier to impress boss Arne Slot this season.

Lewis Koumas has a big future at Liverpool

It appeared inevitable that Koumas would be playing his football away from Anfield this season and the Reds have pulled off a massive coup with his loan move.

After 27 goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances for the AXA Academy, it became clear that the Welsh forward was too high quality to continue competing at the academy level.

With Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and now Federico Chiesa, playing time for the first team would be near impossible for Koumas this term, especially considering Liverpool have drawn Premier League opposition in West Ham United in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Stoke City may have a star on their hands after his impressive start to his stint at the bet365 Stadium, Koumas has scored one goal and added two assists in his first five appearances for The Potters.

Now that Koumas has his first international start under his belt, the sky is the limit for the young forward but it will take an incredible season in the Championship to force his way into Slot’s thinking for next season.
