‘Wow’ – Paul Scholes blown away by what he saw from Liverpool at Old Trafford
Paul Scholes has admitted that he was shocked at the quality Liverpool had when they played Manchester United at Old Trafford.
In the first Liverpool versus United game of the season, the Reds cruised to a 3-0 victory over their arch-rivals on 1 September.
The game was Arne Slot’s first taste of the derby since taking over from Jurgen Klopp at the start of the 2024/25 season.
Scholes, who was present at the game, spoke to Premier League Productions [01/09/24, 6:10 pm] and shared his verdict on the squad that Slot has inherited.
“When you see the squad, the first XI was brilliant. That’s probably their easiest game out of the three they have had,” said Scholes.
“Then we saw the subs warm up and go past us, I thought ‘wow, this is a proper squad of players’. I think [Slot] has been quite fortunate to walk into that.
“Of course, he has to put his own stamp on it and I am sure he will do as we have seen in the first three games.”
Liverpool could make a Premier League title charge this season
The summer transfer window was quite underwhelming for Reds fans.
Many expected the club to add a number six and potentially a centre-back to their ranks in order to bolster their depth.
However, when the transfer of Martin Zubimendi fell through, it seemed that the club only had him in mind to fulfil the role.
Liverpool did manage to get two deals over the line before deadline day with Giorgi Mamardashvili and former Juventus ace Federico Chiesa both being brought in.

Of the two, however, only the Italy international will be an option for Slot this season as Mamardashvili was sent straight back on loan to Valencia.
It’s still early days in the season of course but, with the form that the Reds currently find themselves in, they could make a real push for the Premier League title this season.
