Liverpool U21s survive late scare in vital Premier League 2 victory
Liverpool U21s secured a 3-2 win against Sunderland in Premier League 2 after Tom Watson’s 92nd-minute strike set up a nervy final few minutes at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground.
Barry Lewtas’ side earned their second win in three matches courtesy of goals from James Balagizi and Kieran Morrison, with Dominic Corness scoring what proved to be the decisive goal for the three points.
The Reds held on throughout 12 minutes of stoppage time on the night and the result continues Lewtas’ rocky start to the 2024/25 campaign.

After an underwhelming performance last term, finishing eighth in the league table, 13 points behind eventual winners Tottenham, the Reds look determined to right their wrongs this season.
Lewtas began the league campaign with an impressive 3-1 win against Manchester City but has faced a barren spell suffering losses against PSV, Leicester City and Crewe Alexandra since the Premier League 2 opener.
The youth side have seen their options dwindle as sporting director Richard Hughes oversaw a summer exodus with several key U21 stars completing permanent and temporary moves away from the AXA Training Centre this summer.
Arne Slot will be keeping a close eye on Lewtas’ side this season. The Dutchman has already shown his ruthlessness at Anfield this summer and the squad will be fighting for their future at Liverpool this season.
The young Reds will have plenty of opportunity to impress as the side make their return to the UEFA Youth League this year and every match will be a must-win for Barry Lewtas, with the U21s boss eager to avoid another summer of watching integral players to his side leave the club.
