Melissa Reddy shares what she knows on Mohamed Salah future at Liverpool
Sky Sports reporter Melissa Reddy has shared a fresh update on the future of Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah.
The 32-year-old continued his fine start to the season with two assists and one goal in the 3-0 win against Manchester United on Sunday [1 September] before casting doubt on his Liverpool future as he declared this is his last season at Anfield [Sky Sports].
Reddy reported on her X account [1 September] that despite a lack of communication from the club, the Egyptian believes he can continue to play at the highest level for the Reds.
She said: “My understanding is Mo Salah’s preference is to remain at Liverpool but it is not his job to push for that. His performances speak for itself.
“Salah believes he still has a few years at the highest level, competing for top prizes while breaking records.
“It is significant that no-one at Liverpool has approached him yet to discuss a new contract. Why would the club wait so long to start the process if they want to keep Salah?”
Liverpool could lose Mohamed Salah at the end of the season
Richard Hughes has endured a horrendous start to life as the Reds’ sporting director and will face his biggest test in the coming months.
The former Bournemouth man failed in a public pursuit for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, but he did manage to strengthen the Reds with forward Federico Chiesa and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will remain in Valencia for the 2024/25 season.
It was a fundamental failure as the Reds ignored two problem positions in centre-back and defensive midfield. However, Ryan Gravenberch has been proving the doubters wrong with his performances at the anchor of the midfield three this season.
Salah has been rolling back the years with three goals and three assists in the opening three Premier League matches and will be free to negotiate a move abroad in January should the Reds decide against offering their talisman a new deal.
Even at 32, there is no forward in world football capable of producing the numbers of Salah, and he is doing so in arguably the most competitive league in the world.
With Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also in the final year of their contracts, Hughes has a monumental task of tying down the side’s three key players with less than four months to do so.
