Giorgi Mamardashvili set for Liverpool medical after agreement reached with Valencia – Romano

Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will undergo his medical today ahead of a move to Liverpool, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian journalist reported on his X account [26 August] that the Reds have agreed to a £29.6million package to bring the Georgian goalkeeper to Merseyside.

He will return to Spain upon completion of the deal to spend the 2024/25 campaign at Valencia for more first-team experience before arriving at Anfield at the end of the season.

Liverpool to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili

Liverpool fans can rest easy, their club has signed a player this summer.

The 23-year-old has been ever-present in La Liga since he arrived from Georgian side Locomotive Tbilisi in 2021 and was a standout performer for his country at Euro 2024.

Alisson, whose future has been the subject of speculation during the Reds’ public pursuit of Mamardashvili gave his seal of approval for the goalkeeper ahead of the move [The Times, 24 August].

The Brazilian turned down approaches from Saudi Arabia this summer to remain at Anfield and doesn’t believe the new signing is an immediate threat to his spot in Arne Slot’s side.

Liverpool supporters can breathe a sigh of relief from Alisson’s words, they’re not ready to see the goalkeeper leave the club anytime soon.

While Mamardashvili is a signing for the future it is an excellent coup for the club, future-proofing their goalkeeper department for the foreseeable future with one of the most exciting young prospects in the game.

One who will also be delighted with the news is Caoimhin Kelleher, the Irishman has spoken publically about his desire to be a number one elsewhere [Liverpool ECHO] and you have to assume his wish will be granted next season at the very least.

On paper, this is not the signing that Liverpool need nor one that the supporters will have hoped for but if there are no available players on the market to strengthen the side this summer then looking to the future is the next logical step.

The supporters can understandably feel underwhelmed with this signing but there are still four days left until the 30 August deadline, anything can happen.
