View: Alisson exit from Liverpool in 2025 looks certain amid latest transfer development

Alisson looks certain to leave Liverpool at the end of the season as the Reds close in on his long-term replacement.

Liverpool supporters have been eagerly awaiting the club to sign a player this summer, but this move has underwhelmed the fanbase as it brings the realisation that Alisson’s time at Anfield is drawing to an end.

Alisson looks set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season

Doni, Brad Jones, Loris Karius, Simon Mignolet and the latter years of Pepe Reina – these are the goalkeeper Liverpool fans have had to endure between the posts at Anfield in the past decade.

Reina was an excellent servant for the Reds and was an exceptional goalkeeper for most of his stint on Merseyside.

He declined in the final years at the club but is arguably the best goalkeeper Liverpool had, at least in the modern era, before Alisson.

Philippe Coutinho is the man to thank. His move to Barcelona for £142m in January 2018 gave the club the funds to move for Alisson in the following summer [BBC Sport].

One Brazilian’s career may have suffered but another thrived. Alisson has established himself as one of, if not the, best goalkeepers in the world at Liverpool, and the supporters are not ready to see the 31-year-old leave just yet.

Liverpool Alisson Becker

From the save against Arkadiusz Milik in the 1-0 win over Napoli in the 2018/19 Champions League that saved the Reds from elimination, and ultimately led to the sixth crown, to the injury-time goal against West Brom 2020/21 season that helped secure an unlikely third-place finish in the Premier League; Alisson has been vital to the success at Anfield.

Giorgi Mamardashvili could be the next big thing for Liverpool

Mamardashvili looks like an exciting young prospect. The 23-year-old has been a consistent performer in LaLiga and was a standout at Euro 2024 with Georgia but Alisson, at 31, still has plenty of years at the top level left in his career.

CEO of football Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes are future-proofing the position and it is a smart move considering the lack of quality goalkeepers in football.

Yet Liverpool fans would rather Mamardashvili stayed in Spain if it meant Alisson was the undisputed number one for years to come.

The plan for the pair will become clear once the deal is confirmed. It is a relief that the Reds are finally making moves in the transfer window but a signing that won’t arrive on Merseyside in 2025 doesn’t help Arne Slot this season.

Who knows, Alisson may have communicated his desire to leave the Reds with interest from Saudi Arabia which has prompted the club into action. Only time will tell.
