Liverpool Women learn fate with tough draw in Women’s League Cup
Liverpool Women’s manager Matt Beard learned his side’s fate in the Women’s League Cup after the draw was made on Monday (19 August).
The Reds have been handed a tough draw in Group A of the northern section and will face Newcastle United, Manchester United and Everton.
Liverpool are yet to win the League Cup, having made one final appearance in the 1992/93 season, in what was formerly known as the FA Women’s Premier League Cup, and will begin their 2024/45 campaign in October.
Liverpool to face a familiar face in League Cup
Beard’s side are on an upward trajectory following a remarkable fourth-place finish in the Women’s Super League last term and now the Reds will be looking to add silverware to their success this season.
It was a disappointing display for Liverpool in the League Cup last season with only one win as they were eliminated in the group stage.
Fenway Sports Group has sent a statement of intent to the rest of the WSL this summer with the arrivals of club-record signing Olivia Smith from Sporting CP, Gemma Evans from Manchester United, and Cornelia Kapocs from Linkoping FC.
Evans will face her former side in the competition whereas Melissa Lawley will return to take on the Reds for Merseyside rivals Everton.

Liverpool recorded their only victory in last season’s competition in a 2-1 win against Everton but lost to Man United 1-0 in the same stage.
While the Reds have emerged as a worthy competitor to Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the WSL, Beard will be under pressure to bridge the gap this season.
The club have made great strides in the past year and the final pieces are starting to fall into place, but a historic League Cup win this season will prove that Liverpool are here to stay.
