View: Liverpool reap rewards of £300m plan amid record-breaking announcement

Liverpool have been named the most-watched Premier League club with a cumulative audience of 471 million for all league matches.

The Reds announced the news on their official website [10 August], that Nielsen, a global leader in audience insights, data, and analytics released independent data to determine the Reds as the most-watched club as the Premier League audience has grown by seven per cent on a global scale.

Fenway Sports Group have proven their financial acumen by growing the club’s global reach to increase their commercial revenue which stood at £272m for the 2022/23 financial year.

The Reds’ pre-season tour of the USA was more than just a holiday for the players it was a strategically picked location to benefit the long-term aims of the club.

Liverpool have been shrewd off the pitch since the end of last season and announced commercial deals with Japan Airlines, Husqvarna, Strauss, and Lucozade, which is now the club’s main source of income as they aim to surpass the £300m mark for commercial revenue.

FSG have been criticised for their lack of spending on the pitch during their stewardship but must be applauded for the work off the pitch and their clear vision for ensuring long-term financial stability for the Reds.

The USA was one of the biggest growers for Premier League viewership last season with an increase of 42 per cent and the match between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield in December was the highest recorded live audience, at the time, Nielsen published their data at 2.28 million viewers.

Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan recognised the commercial potential to expand the club on the North American market [The Athletic] and was proven right during the pre-season tour as the Reds flexed their muscles in the USA.

The match against Arsenal recorded a record crowd for football of 69,879 supporters at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, and the Manchester United match attracted 77,559 fans to the Williams-Brice Stadium in South Carolina, the largest crowd to watch football in the state.

FSG have made their dream a reality, Liverpool are one of the most watched and followed clubs in the USA with more than 1.5 billion fan engagements and 11.9 billion views on social media, the most among Premier League sides, and long may it continue.
