Sam Lee shares Manchester City transfer stance on Liverpool attacker Luis Diaz

Sam Lee has poured cold water on speculation that Manchester City have agreed a deal for Liverpool forward Luis Diaz.

Lee, the Man City reporter for The Athletic, reported on his X account [13 August] to discredit claims that Diaz had agreed a move to the Premier League champions.

El Chiringuito TV, a Spanish football show, reported on their X account on Tuesday 13 August, that Diaz had agreed on a five-year deal to join Man City with the club willing to spend £59.8m to secure his signature.

Will Liverpool sell Luis Diaz this summer?

The initial claims that Liverpool would sell any player to Man City are ludicrous but that doesn’t rule out a departure from Anfield for Diaz this summer.

His father, Luis Diaz Sr. has been public about his and his son’s desire to play in Spain as the next step for his career [Metro, 27 March].

Barcelona are the side with the most concrete interest in the forward and, a move could still materialise despite the signing of Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig as their attempts to sign Nico Williams have failed with the winger opting to remain at Athletic Bilbao (Yahoo, 28 July).

The Reds reportedly agreed a £75m fee with Newcastle for winger Anthony Gordon with Joe Gomez moving to St. James Park [The Mirror] in June but, the deal collapsed with the Magpies opting to sell other players before the 30 June PSR deadline.

Liverpool have a long-standing interest in Gordon and may move for the forward again if Diaz leaves Anfield.

The 26-year-old Colombian is expected to start the opening match of the 2024/25 Premier League season against Ipswich Town on Saturday [17 August] after netting a brace in the pre-season friendly against Sevilla on Sunday [11 August].

Reports of a move to Man City lasted around 15 minutes before Lee refuted the original claims, a move to Barcelona, however, has been speculated all summer and if it becomes a reality, could spark Liverpool’s summer transfer window into life.
