Liverpool confirm Billy Koumetio exit at Anfield as new club named

Liverpool have confirmed that young defender Billy Koumetio has left the club to join Scottish Premiership outfit Dundee.

The transfer, which is subject to international clearance, was confirmed on the Reds’ official website on Friday (9 August).

Koumetio was widely expected to leave Anfield this summer, with Dundee showing a particular interest early on [Marc Mechenoua, 17 July].

The move north of the border ends Koumetio’s six-year stay on Merseyside following his switch from Orleans FC in 2018.

Liverpool right to cut ties with Billy Koumetio

Now aged 21 – he turns 22 in November – Koumetio was clearly not going to get a look-in in terms of first-team action under Arne Slot.

The versatile defender made just two senior appearances for the Reds, with the first of those coming in the Champions League four years ago.

Koumetio’s most recent senior outing was in an EFL Cup tie 12 months later, with the majority of the period since then spent out on loan.

Indeed, he has played for Austria Vienna, USL Dunkerque and Blackburn Rovers without making any major impact.

That is not to say Koumetio will not be a success elsewhere, and this move to Dundee looks like it could suit him nicely.

Liverpool are blessed with plenty of academy gems right now, many of whom are already in first-team contention.

Unfortunately, Koumetio was down the pecking order and an exit always seemed likely.
