Aston Villa to plot move for Liverpool ace Joe Gomez if player sale completed – report

Aston Villa will target a move for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez if Diego Carlos leaves Villa Park this summer, according to The Telegraph.

Writing on their website [8 August], the outlet reported Villa will look to replace Carlos should he leave, with interest from Fulham and West Ham United, and named Gomez and Lutsharel Geertruida as potential targets.

Unai Emery wants versatility in his defence and Gomez has played across the backline for Liverpool, starring as left-back deputising for Andy Robertson last season.

Liverpool exit for Joe Gomez is becoming a certainty

Liverpool are accelerating their plans in the final month of the transfer window. Arne Slot has completed his assessment of the side.

The Reds have identified Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as the number one target this summer [Dave OCKOP] and negotiations are underway to bring the Spain international to Anfield.

But Gomez, who has been at Anfield for nine years could force an exit this summer after reports emerged he was on the brink of joining Newcastle United for £45m, in a deal that would have seen Anthony Gordon move to the Reds in a £75m deal. [The Mirror]

The 27-year-old enjoyed a productive campaign at left-back for Jurgen Klopp last season, making 51 appearances across all competitions.

His search for his first Liverpool goal became a hot topic amongst supporters with echoes of “shoot” echoing around Anfield every time the ball was at his feet in the opposition half.

Gomez was a mainstay in the defence alongside Virgil van Dijk in the 2019/20 Premier League winning campaign, and he has become a part of the furniture at Anfield on his way to winning every domestic competition and the Champions League.

His performances earned him a call-up to the England side for Euro 2024 and his stock has never been higher should the Reds move Gomez on this summer. But, homegrown talent is hard to come by, and Gomez knows Liverpool and the demands of wearing the shirt all too well.

Slot must do everything to convince Gomez to remain at Anfield.
